Ahoy, Matey! Welcome to South Bay, where cinema meets the sea!
The South Bay Drive-in first set sail in 1958 and soon became a backyard vacation destination for SanDiego area families with kids and young adults looking for an easy breezy date night under the stars.
All hands were on deck before we first opened to hoist up our original 100 foot screen. Our first major remodel was in 1974 when we replaced the original screen and added two more, making us the three screen destination we are today. In 2008 we overhauled our bait and tackle by adding Technalight Projectors and powerful FM Stereo Transmitters to ensure a bright, crisp picture and booming crystal clear sound. Then in 2013 we dry-docked for a few days to upgrade our projectors to a fully digital system. The South Bay now boasts the best and brightest picture quality available at any drive-in!
There has been a major resurgence in the popularity of the Drive-in theaters over the past few years. With the introduction of super-bright digital projectors where we show all the latest releases the Drive-in has once again become the destination for folks looking for a great night out. In a culture where family time has become too rare and the price of movie tickets can break the budget, the South Bay Drive-in surfaces to satisfy your thirst for affordable, quality, family entertainment. Good thing we are open 7 days a week, 362 days a year! After all, why just go and see a movie when you can experience one?
